Reiki is a Japanese word for ‘universal life energy’ and is also a word to describe a natural healing system. It was founded by Mikao Usui in the early 20th century. Thanks to ……. (2 other names) it found its way to the West.

Reiki is a natural energy that works on every level, not just the physical but also emotional, spiritual. It is understood to promote the body’s regenerative self-healing ability. It is a tradition that is open to any belief system.

The best way to understand Reiki is to try a treatment or two or it is something that needs to be experienced. Anyone open to change, since all healing involves change, would benefit from Reiki. Sometimes people come to reiki when they have explored many other avenues in search of help.

What happens during a Reiki treatment?

You remain dressed and lying down on a massage table ( but you can also sit in a chair). Reiki is associated with laying hands on the body but actual touch isn’t necessary. The Reiki energy can be transmitted while hovering hands a 2-12 cm (1 -2 inches) from the body. 

During the treatment you may feel Reiki energy in a form such as heat, cold, tingling, a breeze, energy movements inside. Some people experience colours, sounds or smells. Also you can feel a sudden rise of emotions – this is so reiki appears to restimulate the body’s innate healing process. 

Alternatively, some people feel nothing at all. It is not important to understand what each experience means, just to accept it as part of the experience. What matters more is to be aware of what is happening in the body and mind during the session and notice what happens to symptoms over a period of time. 

As a natural healing method it is good to allow plenty of time for Reiki to have an effect, so a series of treatments is going to be more beneficial than a single treatment in most cases. However, you can feel the benefits of one treatment as well.
